Washington I. Chase was born in Logan Co., Ohio, May 10, 1838, and died at his in this city on Thursday, May 25, 1911, after a lingering illness, aged 73 years and 15 days. In 1855 he moved with his parents to Postville, Iowa. In 1864 he was married to Miss Lydia Dresser and moved to a farm on Henderson Prairie. In 1890 they rented the farm and built a house in the east part of town where they have since lived.

Though a member of a family of ten children he is survived by only one brother, Caleb Chase, of Cherokee, Ia.

His wife and four children--three sons and one daughter--remain to mourn his departure.

Mr. Chase was a quiet and unassuming man, honorable and upright in all his dealings, a good friend, neighbor and citizen, who ever aimed to do the right as his mind gave him the light to see it. For a number of years he was president and superintendent of the Postville Cemetery association and it was through his efforts mainly that the grounds were put in their present beautiful condition.

The funeral was held from the Congregational church at two o'clock last Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. J. F. Childress.

The floral offerings were profuse and beautiful.

Those present from abroad were:-- Mr. and Mrs. Alva Chase, of Doland, S.D.; Mr. and Mrs. Fred Chase and Gilbert Chase, of Colton, S.D.; Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hagensick, Mr. Uecker and daughters Alma, Lovina and Delia of Elkader; Mrs. Frank Blaha, of Monona.
