Postville Review, Fri., Oct. 11, 1912.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------.

John Sanders was born on a farm in Grand Meadow township about six miles south of Postville, Nov, 9, 1858. There and in the vicinity of Postville he spent his childhood and grew to manhood.

Thirtyone years ago this fall he, with his brotherinlaw, H. S. Luhman, established the mercantile firm of Luhman & Sanders of which he was a member until the time of his death, October 8, 1912. Anyone who knew Mr. Sanders knows the pleasure and enjoyment he derived from his work in the store. Here he formed many strong ties of friendship. He assisted in organizing the Citizens State Bank of Postville and was one of its directors for 18 years.

In 1886 he married Jessie Coyel. To them were born three children - Gilbert, Kenneth and Jeannette. He is also survived by three sisters - Mrs. Taylor of Chicago Heights, Ill.; Mrs. Luhman and Miss Addie Sanders of Postville. His father and mother, two sisters and one brother have preceded him in death.

Of John Sanders the oft-repeated phrase can be truthfully applied, that "he was a kind husband, a loving father and a good citizen."

He was a member of the local Masonic lodge, the Chapter at Elgin and the Knights Templar Commandery at West Union. While still a young man he united with the M. E. church.

These last months he had enjoyed reading the Bible and frequently used these two expressions, "God knows" and "God is good."

The funeral was held from the M. E. church at 2:45 last Sunday afternoon, conducted by Dr. D. M. Parker of Fayette, and was one of the most largely attended gatherings of its kind ever held in Postville. Interment in the Postville cemetery.

Relatives from away present were: Mrs. M. O. Taylor, Chicago Heights, Ill; C. W. Douglass, Alexandria, Neb.; John F. Sanders, Rudd; Leo Sanders, Charles City; Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Taylor, Waukon; Andrew Smith, Castalia;(the next line/person was unreadable.).
