Rites Held For Arbe Behrens

Funeral services were conducted at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Postville on Saturday, Dec. 13, for Arbe C. Behrens, who passed away Monday, Dec. 8, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. The Rev. Conrad Simonson officiated. Burial was in the Postville cemetery.

Arbe Charles Behrens, son of Arthur Behrens and Mary Meier Behrens, was born May 20, 1895 in Postville.

He was educated in the Postville Public Schools from which he graduated in 1912. He attended Iowa State university at Ames, Iowa.

Arbe worked with his father on the farm until Sept. 26, 1918 when he married Helen Leui. They lived on the Behrens homestead farm for a number of years, until they purchased the Mort Deering farm north of Postville, where they resided until moving to Postville in 1951. In 1954 they purchased the Behrens homestead farm, where they built a new home in which they lived until the spring of 1960. At that time they moved to Postville again, where he has since resided.

Arbe Behrens was a member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church. He was a charter member of Postville Chapter of Kiwanis International and faithful in attendance until his death. He was a member of the election board, township trustee, and worked with the soil bank of Allamakee County. He was a world traveler, spending a part of each year in some foreign country.

Arbe had been a member of Brotherly Love Lodge No. 204 A. F. and A. M. since 1918 and received his 50 year membership certificate in 1965. He was also a member of Iowa Consistory and Elkahir Shrine of Cedar Rapids, N. E. Iowa shrine club, and the Order of the Eastern Star.

Mr. Behrens' wife died in 1961, his father and mother preceded him in death. Of his immediate family he is survived by one sister, Lorene (H. T.) Barker of Scottsdale, Arizona; one brother, William Behrens and wife of Racine, Wisconsin and one brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Hill of Postville; 2 aunts, Mrs. Herman Dettmer of Garnavillo and Mrs. Martha Meier of Cedarburg, Wisconsin and one uncle, Walter Ahlers of Grafton, Wisconsin; 4 nephews and 2 nieces.
