Funeral services for Kate Cassell were held Thursday, March 28, 2002, at 10 a.m. in the Good Samaritan Center Chapel. The service was conducted by the Reverend Gary Catterson of Community Presbyterian Church in Postville, Iowa. The organist was Joann Martins and special music was provided by granddaughter, Andrea Poppe-Grove and great granddaughter, Katheryn Poppe-Grove. The Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Burial was on Friday, March 29, 2002 at 10:30 a.m. in the Walnut Grove Cemetery at Corning, Iowa. Casket bearers were: Scott Bull, Dick Johannes, Erik Poppe, C. J. Poppe, Robert L. Brown, Norm Leeman, Leonard Schutte, Howard Stumme and Burnell Sander.

Katheryn Mae "Kate" Johannes Cassell, the daughter of Louis Henry and Ida Mae (Cox) Johannes, was born August 12, 1906, in Cass County near Atlantic, Iowa. She passed away Monday, March 25, 2002, in the Good Samaritan Center at Postville, Iowa. She had reached the age of 95 years, 7 months and 13 days.

She was baptized in the Christian Church at Corning, Iowa. Kate attended the rural schools of Adams County and moved to Corning, Iowa, where she graduated from the Corning High School in 1927 with a degree in Normal Training. She was employed as a telephone operator and in 1928 was promoted to Chief Operator, Cashier and Bookkeeper, which she held until 1934. She worked part time for the Adams County Free Press Newspaper and also substituted for the Society Editor.

On May 13, 1930, Kate and Arnold H. Cassell were married at Red Oak, Iowa. In 1936 she joined her husband who worked on the Rural Electric Construction crew. She traveled with him in Iowa, Illinois, Missouri and Texas, coming to Postville in 1941. A daughter, Margo, was born on August 20, 1944. Kate loved to travel and saw numerous sites in the United States, Canada and Mexico. She loved to baby sit and cared for the children of many families. Kate loved people of all ages but her favorites were the children. In 1949 Kate had served as Vice President of the '49ers for the Postville Centennial Celebration. Kate was an avid reader and read between 75 and 100 books a year.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Arnold "Shorty" Cassell, who died in 1974, 3 brothers, Charles, Frederick and John (Bill); and 3 sisters, Annabel McEwen, Alice Mills, and Mary Johannes.

Surviving is her daughter, Margo Bull of Redford, Michigan, a granddaughter, Andrea Poppe-Grove and her husband, Christopher Grove of Ypsilanti, Michigan, and a grandson, Scott Bull of Redford, Michigan; 3 great grandchildren, Katheryn Poppe, Erik Poppe and C. J. Poppe, 2 step-great grandchildren, Jenna and Emily Grove; several nieces and nephews, including Dick (Pauline) Johannes of Lawton, Oklahoma and Mary Lou Gaines of Omaha, Nebraska, other relatives and many friends.
