Lansing, Ia., Dec 10 - Dr. John W. Davis, well known throughout this section of the state and a resident of Lansing for more than half a century, died at his home here Monday night. Death resulted from heart disease. Members of his family found him dead in his bed.

Dr. Davis was born at Washington, Ind., August 9 1837. While a young man, he went to Washington, D.C., where he lived for sixteen years, and during this time, studied and graduated from a homeopathic medical college.

He enlisted in the Fifth Wisconsin after responding to Lincoln's first call for volunteers and served to the end of the war. After the Civil war he came to Lansing to make a practice of medicine in 1865. Since that time he has been a resident physician here with the exception of about ten years spent in Palmyra, Wis., and Dubuque, Ia.

On September 5 1866, he was married to Elizabeth Morgan, who survives him with two daughters, Mrs. A.A.L. Sperry, of Owatonna, Minn., and Mrs. H.W. Battin, of Minneapolis, Minn., and an adopted son, George B. Davis, of Waukon. Two sons and two daughters preceded him to the grave. He was of a most genial disposition, optimistic at all times, and his pleasant smile and cheer salutation, "lovely day", will be missed by all who had the pleasure of his acquaintance.
