Edwin "Sonny" Keehn
Edwin H. “Sonny” Keehn Jr., 77, of Dubuque died at 11:05 a.m. Sunday, February 26, 2012 at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque of natural causes. Services were held Wednesday, February 29 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 1780 White Street, Dubuque. Burial was held at Linwood Cemetery.
Edwin was born October 30, 1934 in Chicago, IL, the son of Edwin and Dora (Johnson) Keehn. He attended the rural “Fan School” east of Waukon and graduated from Harpers Ferry High School. He married Darlene (Halvorson) Keehn March 30, 1963 at First Presbyterian Church in Waukon.
Edwin worked for Melvin Anderson and Rubin Nolting, as well as several other farms in the Waukon area, including many years working on his grandparents’ farm. He later went on to work at the creamery in Garnavillo, Sid Wells Petroleum in Bettendorf, and Central State Foods in Dubuque. He retired from Bethany Home as the maintenance supervisor after 31 years in 2008. He was a member of the St. Matthew Church.
Edwin enjoyed fishing, camping and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed spending time out on his porch swing listening to music and visiting with friends and family. Even after his retirement, he still enjoyed spending the day at Bethany with Larry, helping him around the maintenance shop.
After his foot amputation, he found a new joy in riding lawn mowers and cutting grass for his children. He also found great joy being the “handyman” of the family, always willing to lend a hand whenever his family needed him.
Edwin was an avid Green Bay Packers fan and enjoyed watching his favorite NASCAR driver, Mark Martin. Above all, his biggest joy and highlight of his day was taking care of and spending time with his dog and best friend, Puddles.
Surviving are his wife, Darlene Keehn of Dubuque; his three children, William (Melissa) Keehn of Dubuque, Ron (Mary) Keehn of Peosta, and Shelley (Mike) Healy of Dubuque; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; his mother-in-law, Lorine Halvorson; a cousin, Emmett Nolting, and Emmett's daughter, Diane, of Waukon; his brothers- and sisters-in-law, Richard (Bernie) Halvorson of East Dubuque, and Herbert Halvorson, Jr., Lois (Charles) Rolfs and Wanda Barker, all of Waukon; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his grandparents, Otto and Minnie Keehn; his father-in-law, Herbert Halvorson; a sister-in-law, Mary Lou Halvorson; a brother-in-law, Gary Barker; and a nephew, Russell Halvorson. The Waukon Standard, March 7, 2012
