Gilman B. Kolsrud, 94, of Waukon, died Thursday, June 19, 2003, at Northgate Care Center in Waukon following a brief illness. Funeral services were held Monday, June 23 at Waterville Lutheran Church in Waterville with Rev. Laura Gentry officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon assisted the family with arrangements. Gilman Bernard Kolsrud was born April 28, 1909, on the rural Waterville farm of his parents, Sander and Anna (Hanson) Kolsrud. He attended the rural "Ness School" and Waterville Consolidated School. On June 22, 1932, he married Alphia M. Lund at the First Presbyterian Church Parsonage in Waukon. Gilman and Alphia farmed together near Waterville for many years, milking cows and raising hogs, chickens, and crops. Gilman also drove school bus for a time. They retired to Waukon in 1980. He was an active member of the Waterville Lutheran Church, where he served on the council. He was also a member of the Waterville School Board and Allamakee County Farm Bureau. Gilman enjoyed music. He played the violin and harmonica and taped a lot of old time music. He was an avid card player and also enjoyed gardening. Gilman was a regular supporter of community and church events. He loved spending time with his family and was a regular and faithful visitor with friends and neighbors.
Survivors include his wife, Alphia of Waukon; two daughters, Marilyn (Barton) Hamm of Waterville and Janet (Duane) Donovan of Prescott, Ariz.; six grandchildren, Greg (Becky) Hamm, Jeff Hamm, Sandy Weeks, Brad (Stacy) Hamm, Michelle (John) Clune, and Kristin Donovan; nine great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers, Helmer, Sidney, Dewey, Tennis, Floyd, and infant Odin; and four sisters, Bertha and Stella Kolsrud, Esther Geving, and Thelma Gjefle.Honorary casketbearers were Robert Kolsrud, Paul Selberg, Leonard Thies, Robert Stuckman, Vernon Melcher, Walter Hagen, Ozzie Quandahl, Gene Sickels, and Daniel Schlitter. Casketbearers were Gary and David Kolsrud, Richard Geving, Paul Snitker, Jim Thies, Kevin Selberg, Steve Snitker, and Allan Rissman.©Waukon Standard 2003
