Ambrose Welch 1919-2003

Ambrose A. Welch, age 83, of Waukon, died Monday, June 2, 2003, at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon following a brief illness. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 4 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Waukon with Father Joseph Schneider officiating. Burial will be held in St. Mary's Lycurgus Cemetery in rural Waukon. Martin Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. Ambrose Anthony Welch was born September 3, 1919, on the rural Lycurgus farm of his parents, James Lawrence and Mary Elizabeth (Sweeney) Welch. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary's Lycurgus Catholic Church, attended rural country schools, and graduated from Waukon High School in 1938. Ambrose also attended a tech school in Spencer, Iowa. He moved to Baltimore, Maryland, where he worked on defense planes during World War II. After the war was over, Ambrose moved to Waterloo, where he worked at Hausladen's Auto Supply. In 1952, he moved back to Waukon and purchased Hausladen's Auto Supply in Waukon. On October 31, 1953, he married Phyllis Ewing at St. Mary's Lycurgus Catholic Church. Ambrose was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, where he was a Eucharistic Minister. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, where he served as treasurer for 25 years. Ambrose and Phyllis were members of the Allamakee Antique Auto Club. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Ambrose also enjoyed playing cards, fishing, hunting, and restored several antique cars and tractors. Survivors include his wife, Phyllis of Waukon; three sons, Charles Welch and Tim (Kristy) Welch, both of Waukon, and Tom (Diane) Welch of St. Charles, Minn.; three daughters, Mary (Bob) Axmear, Joan (Gary) David, and Jane (Jeff) David, all of Waukon; seven grandchildren; a brother, Ralph (Joann) Welch of Waukon; a sister, Lorraine Adam of Waukon; and a sister-in-law, Leona (Bob) Welsh of Caledonia, Minn.
He is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Clem and James Jr. Welch; and a brother-in-law, Leonard Adam. Honorary casketbearers are Doris Berns, Marilyn Larson, and Steve and Helen Christianson. Casketbearers are Rich Schulte, Lyle Larson, Charles Berns, Cletus Rooney, Ray O'Hare, and Gordon Steffenson.
