James Allison, 54, Waukon was killed over the Labor Day weekend in the crash of his motorcycle off a county blacktop road near St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Paint Rock, about 2 miles west of Harpers Ferry.

Allamakee county Sheriff Theodore Rumph says Allison was in Harpers Ferry until late Sunday evening, but it isn't known when the accident happened. His body and the motorcycle were not found until Monday evening. Sheriff Rumph says his office was notifiied of Allison's absence Monday, and when a search failed to turn up any trace, Waukon firemen was summoned to aid by use of a single blast of a siren about 6 pm. The body was bound by Bill Clark, who was riding in Gilbert's ambulance and had a better view from the higher vehicle than that offered by regular automobiles.

Officers say Allison apparently was coming up the hill from Harpers Ferry and did not make the sharp turn, but instead went across a portion of the church's driveway and hit a telephone pole.

Allison's death was the seventh highway fatality in Allamakee county this year.
