Joe Helgeson

Joe J. Helgeson, 42, of Genoa, WI passed away unexpectedly Thursday, September 22, 2011. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Wednesday, September 28 at St. Charles Catholic Church, Genoa, WI. Father Robert J. Cook and Deacon Richard Sage officiated. There will be no burial.

Joe was born in LaCrosse, WI July 23, 1969 to Erling “Butch” and Faye Pennel Helgeson. He grew up in Stoddard, WI and attended DeSoto High School. August 29, 1992, Joe married the love of his life, Theresa Keenan. He worked for Tande Construction until 1998 when he went into business for himself. He owned and operated Helgeson Construction until the time of his passing. Joe loved his family. His children Drake, Bowe, Fletcher and Mya brought joy to his life every day.

He loved hunting and took many trips out west where he was successful in bringing home many trophies that he displayed proudly in his home. Joe taught his boys how to hunt and enjoyed his times with them in the woods of Wisconsin, Wyoming and Montana. He enjoyed watching NASCAR races and was an avid Dale Earnhardt, Jr. fan. He loved the Packers and the DeSoto Pirates. Joe was proud to see his boys, Drake and Bowe, play on the same football field where he played during his high school years. He enjoyed years of scouting with Fletcher and was happy to see him enjoying the outdoors as much as his dad.
Joe was very proud of his little girl, Mya, and talked often of the day that he would walk her down the aisle. The two of them enjoyed roller coaster rides and he would even admit that she was braver than he when the ride was finished. Joe also enjoyed every minute of the time that he spent go-kart racing with Drake all over the country. He was proud of Drake’s accomplishments. His “racing family” was very important to him. Joe looked forward to the time spent at the track.

Survivors include his wife, Theresa, and his four children, all of Genoa, WI; his brothers, Brent (Kathy) Helgeson of Holmen, WI and Mike (Lori) Helgeson of Belfield, ND; his sister, Susan (Jason) Burany of Bonduel, WI; his father, Butch Helgeson of Stoddard, WI; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Jim and Sandra Keenan of Lansing; his sister-in-law, Laurie (Arvid) Hatlan of Waukon; his nieces and nephews, Katy and Megan Helgeson of Belfield, ND, Brian (Katy) Helgeson of Montana, Brandon Helgeson of Holmen, WI, Taylor and Tanner Helgeson of Stoddard, WI, Ellen and Bryce Barrett of Holmen, WI, Adam Hatlan of West Bend, WI, Josh Hatlan of Cedar Rapids, Nick Hatlan of Ames, and Emma, Brock and Noah Hatlan of Waukon. He is further survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends, including his racing family scattered all over the country.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Faye; and his son, Cole, whose passing left a void in his life that would never be filled.

Life will never be the same, but we will go on as you wanted us to. Your unconditional love for your family will never be forgotten. Your memory will live in our hearts forever.
Be at peace. LUMU.
