Catherine Byrnes

Catherine Ann Byrnes, 96, of Waukon passed away peacefully Friday, September 23, 2011 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon, surrounded by her family. Funeral services were held Tuesday, September 27 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Waukon with Fr. Joseph Schneider officiating. Burial was at Mt. Olivet Catholic Cemetery.
She was born May 6, 1915 in Postville to Eva (Beall) and Patrick Reddy. She received her early education in country school and St. Patrick’s School. She graduated in 1933 from Waukon High School with a “Normal Training” degree and began to pursue her love of teaching. She taught country school for ten years.
January 6, 1944 Catherine married Lawrence (Doc) William Byrnes, the love of her life, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Waukon. Due to his wartime injuries they only had nine years until Doc was called to his heavenly home. Catherine raised their three daughters while caring for her aged mother.
Catherine was very active in the community. She was involved with Allamakee County Farm Bureau, American Legion Auxiliary, Gold Star Wives, Retired Teachers Association, Homemakers Club, St. Martin Rosary Study Club, and was a 4-H leader for 50 years, as well as a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon. She will certainly be remembered as one who loved her family and friends. She never considered herself retired, always making tray favors for shut-ins, writing a poem or crocheting so many things to share with others.
Survivors include her three daughters, Colleen (Pat) Burns of La Crescent, MN, Rose Magner of Waukon and Elaine (Ted) Gaul of Des Moines; ten grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
