Funeral services for Richard Meyer were held Tuesday, April 6, 2003, at 10:30 A. M. in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Postville. The Reverend James Allison officiated. Special music was provided by Joann Martins, organist, and Kim Schutte, soloist. The Casket Bearers were: Terry Meyer, Jason White, Bryan Livingood, Mike Plaht, Randy Plaht, Larry Plaht. Honorary Casket Bearers were: Brad Plaht, Scott Plaht, Mark Meyer, Brent Livingood. The Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery. Richard Gustav Meyer, the son of Frederick F. Meyer and Bertha (nee Kuhse) Meyer, was born August 29, 1922, in Grand Meadow Township, Clayton County, near Postville, Iowa. He passed away Saturday, May 3, 2003, at his home in Postville. He had reached the age of 80 years, 8 months, and 4 days. He was baptized August 28, 1922 in St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville by Pastor Schmidt, and confirmed there on April 5, 1936 by Pastor Garten. He graduated from Postville High School in 1940. He served in the United State Army during World War II. On April 15, 1947, Richard was married to Darlene Elizabeth Schroeder in St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville by the Reverend Frederick R. Ludwig. To this union one daughter, Kathryn, was born. Dick was employed as a driver for the 7-Up Company, at the Schutte Furniture Store and then for Marianna and Fauser Oil Company. He enjoyed gardening and was a fine cook. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and the Postville Volunteer Fire Department and had served as Assistant Chief. Dick was also a member of the V. F. W., serving as Commander and Quarter Master, the American Legion, the Big Four Fair Board, Senior Citizens, and helped with the S.H.A.R.E. program. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Darlene who died in 2000, two brothers who died in infancy, two brothers-in-law, Harvey Plaht, and Milton Schroeder, and a sister-in-law, Doris Meyer. Surviving are his daughter, Kathryn and husband, Dale Westendorf of Westgate, Iowa; two grandchildren, Karla Albers of Waverly, IA, and Kristi (Bryan) Shannon of Waterloo, IA; one great grandchild, Autumn Rayne Albers; three sisters, Joan Plaht, Marlene (Willis) Livingood, and Darlene (Harlan) White, all of Postville, four brothers, Harold Meyer, Donald Meyer, Roland Meyer, and Gerald (Sharon) Meyer, all of Postville, and Frederick (Shirley) Meyer of Monona; a sister-in-law, Vila Schroeder of Farmersburg, IA, and a brother-in-law, Merlin (Michele) Schroeder of Newark, CA; and many nieces and nephews.
