Myrtle Spinner

Myrtle C. “Myrt” Spinner, 79, of Davenport died Tuesday, September 20, 2011 at her home surrounded by her loving family following a courageous battle with cancer. Funeral services and a Mass of Christian Burial were held Saturday, September 24 at Sacred Heart Cathedral, Davenport. Burial was in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Davenport.
Myrtle Cecelia Luster was born September 7, 1932 in Harpers Ferry, a daughter of John and Loella (Schellsmidt) Luster. She was united in marriage to Donald R. Spinner May 16, 1953 at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Harpers Ferry. Donald preceded her in death September 17, 2000.
Myrt was a member of Sacred Heart Cathedral, the Altar and Rosary, and volunteered at Sacred Heart School as a room mother, as well as being a member of AARP and the American Legion Auxiliary. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who cherished most the time spent with her family, especially her grandchildren, who she enjoyed reading to and playing with. She enjoyed cooking, baking, fishing, gardening and tending her flowers.
Myrtle was a die-hard Cub and Hawkeye fan, and had also enjoyed watching “Jeopardy” and “Wheel-of-Fortune”.
Memorials may be made to Sacred Heart Cathedral or Genesis Hospice VNA.
Those left to cherish her memory are her children and their spouses, David (Terri) Spinner of Davenport, Sheila (Dennis) Harford of Davenport, Sheryl (Brian) Mumm of DeWitt, Stephen Spinner of Davenport, Denise (Chad) Lekwa of Davenport, and Dianne (Mark) Abels of Durant; her grandchildren, Jennifer (Antonio) Alfaro, Jeff (Krista) Spinner, Nick (Jess) Newkirk, Joseph (Sarah) Spinner, Angela (Bryce) Newkirk, Ryan Spinner, Jeremy Abels and Luke Abels; her great-grandchildren, Allison, Alex, Caleb, Makenzie, Lucy, Kaitlynn, Patrick, Isabella and two more she was anxiously awaiting; her siblings, Mary (Neil) Kane, Ernie (Alice) Luster, Clarence (Kay) Luster, Madonna (Jim) Rouillier, Helen (Dick) Hanesworth, Johnny (Joyce) Luster, Charles Luster, Charlotte (Glenn) Monroe; her sisters-in-law, Connie Luster, Ginny Luster and Jan Gunderson; and a brother-in-law, Mike (Katie) Spinner.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Bradley James Newkirk; her brothers, Harley Luster and James Luster; a sister-in-law, Rita Luster; and a brother-in-law, Donnie Rissman.
