Donald G. Todd, 82, of Waukon died Sunday, August 21, 2011 at his home in rural Waukon, surrounded by his loving family. A Celebration of Life Service will be held Wednesday, August 24 at 3 p.m. at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon. Burial with military graveside rites will be held at Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Family will greet family and friends from 1-3 p.m. Wednesday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Decorah Public Library.
Donald George Todd was born April 16, 1929 in Waukon, the son of Frank Wayne and Melva Charlotte (Hanson) Todd. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Waukon. Don graduated from Waukon High School in 1947 and attended the University of Iowa. Don farmed for a short time before entering the United States Army, where he served from 1954 until 1956 as an ammunitions specialist.
In 1958, he married Ingrid Jensen of Oslo, Norway and they had four children together. Don farmed in Ludlow Township for several years. He also worked as a carpenter, real estate agent and auctioneer. June 25, 1988 he married Julie A. Arrasmith at St. John’s Lutheran Church. She died in 1997.
Don was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Bluff Country Cruisers, V.F.W. and the Farm Bureau. He enjoyed nature, traveling, camping, fishing, hunting, taking scenic drives, dancing, playing cards and playing pool. His favorite times were spent with his family and friends and spending time at the cabin near Sattre.
Don was known as a kind-hearted storyteller and had a strong passion for life and nature.
Survivors include a special friend, Cheryl Phillips of Calmar; his children, Lisa (Terry) Winchel of Tomah, WI, Shawna Todd of Minneapolis, MN, Dana (Craig) Helton of Decorah and Derek (Mari) Todd of Ridgeway; nine grandchildren, Nicolai, Thorin and Olivia Ketelsen, Izac and Noah Jens, Dallas Helton, Kari Todd, and Jonah and Gabe Johnson; and one sister, Wilma Talarico of Grand Haven, MI. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Julie; an infant brother, Harry; and a sister, Clarice Tysland.
Casketbearers are Terry Winchel, Craig and Dallas Helton, Thorin Ketelsen, and Noah and Izac Jens.
