Services Held For Margaret Cheek

Services were held Thursday, September 20, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville, for Margaret (Huebner) Cheek who died at her home in Houston, Texas, September 13, 1973. The Rev. Norman Ullestad officiated. Burial was in Postville Cemetery.

Margaret M. Huebner, daughter of Rudolph C. and Estella (Zieman) Huebner, was born in Postville, Iowa, September 6, 1924.

Margaret was baptized into St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville on September 30, 1924. She was confirmed in St. Paul's on November 13, 1938.

She attended and graduated from Postville public schools during which time she received national recognition for her musical accomplishments. Her picture appeared on the cover of a national music magazine "The School Musician". After graduation from high school she played with the Monahan Post American Legion Band of Sioux City during the summer months as a baritone soloist. She received a scholarship to Dana School of Music in Youngstown, Ohio. The following year she traveled with Parkinson's Musical Ensemble of LeMars, Iowa touring the United States appearing in public schools and other educational centers.

She then attended and graduated with honors from Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois, with a Master's Degree in Music. Her major instrument was French horn for which she received national acclaim. She studied with Maxs Pottag. She presented concerts as well as playing in the San Antonio Symphony Orchestra while teaching in their local school system.

She was married to James R. Cheek in 1962, to which union one daughter was born.

She was preceded in death by her husband on January 16, 1973.

Surviving are her daughter Pamela, her parents, one sister, Mrs. Ernest Overland, two step daughters, Mrs. Christine Wells, and Paulette Cheek, one step grandson and three nieces.
