Alice Long

Alice M. Long, 99, long-time resident of Lansing, died Thursday, July 21, 2011 at Thornton Manor Nursing Home in Lansing. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, August 8 at Lansing United Methodist Church. Remembrance will be one hour prior to services at the church. Cremation will have taken place.
Alice was born November 10, 1911 to Julia and George Pangburn in Sauk Centre, MN. After graduating from high school, she attended Sauk Center Normal School, the equivalent of a teachers college. With the outbreak of WWII, she moved to Minneapolis, MN and worked for Minneapolis Regulator Company (Honeywell).
She married Merritt Weidman Long August 10, 1940. After the war, Merritt owned several movie theaters before purchasing the LANS Theater and settling down in Lansing in 1948. Alice was his partner in the theater business until they sold the LANS and retired in 1971.
Alice was very active in Eastern Star, having served as Worthy Matron multiple times. She was a member of the P.E.O. sisterhood for more than 55 years, having served in all officer positions. A long-time involved member of the First Presbyterian Church, she became active in the Methodist Church when the two churches merged. She served on many boards and committees of both churches. She was a volunteer at Thornton Manor and enjoyed helping residents play bingo, which continued even after moving to Thornton Heights assisted living. Her last years were spent at Thornton Manor.
She is survived by her brother, Leonard Pangburn of Spring Lake Park, MN; and by her children, Kathleen Tara (Wayne) Scheffel of Burnsville, MN and Keith M. (Mary) Long of Beatrice, NE; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
