John Goettel

John D. Goettel, 90, of Harpers Ferry died Wednesday, July 20, 2011 at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse, WI. Funeral services were held Saturday, July 23 at First Baptist Church in Waukon, with Pastor Duane Smith officiating. Burial was at Oak Hill Cemetery, Lansing.
John Daniel Goettel was born February 9, 1921 at Thompson’s Corners in rural Harpers Ferry on the family farm of his parents, Daniel and Esther (Hacklander) Goettel. He attended Prairie Lafayette country school in the rural Harpers Ferry area, graduated from Waterville High School in 1938 and attended Westmar College in LaMars.
June 1, 1945 he married Dorothy Sandry at Evangelical United Brethern Church in Lansing. They farmed together on the Goettel family farm in Lafayette Township, where they raised beef cattle, hogs, crops and milked cows. John remained very active in farming until the time of his death.
John was a member of First Baptist Church, where he was very active in all aspects of the church. He was also a member, held elected positions, and was a board member in the Farm Bureau, German Farmers Mutual Insurance, Masons, and the Gideons. John was active in the Republican Central Committee and on the election board for Allamakee County. He also served on the Allamakee County Board of Adjustments.
John enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, taking care of his animals and pets on the farm, woodworking, working in the garden, hunting, reading, and following the Chicago Cubs, Iowa Hawkeyes, and Green Bay Packers.
Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Dorothy Goettel of Harpers Ferry; his children, Linda Goettel of Hiawatha, Barb Goettel of Clear Lake, Deb (Steve) Kiley of Harpers Ferry, Jerri (Jeff) Krezine of Wausau, WI and Jeff (Elaine) Goettel of Harpers Ferry; eight grandchildren, Dan and Jared Kiley, Sarah (Nick) Latzl, Patrick Frank, Jeremy Johnson, and Aislinn, Gabriel and Eireanne Goettel; three great-grandchildren, Wyatt and Johnathan Kiley and Sean Byrnes. He was preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter, Karianne Kiley; two sisters, Lois Munz and Alice Mae Schild; and two brothers, Lloyd and Arlyss Goettel.
Casketbearers were Jared and Dan Kiley, Patrick Frank, Franklin, Steve and Eric Weymiller, Dave Schon, and Roger Ellefson. Honorary casketbearers were Tim Frank, James Gruber, Sr., Jeremy Johnson, Jeff Krezine and Ross Ellefson.
