Rites Held For Mrs. Christofferson

Mrs. Henry Christofferson, the former Florence Katherine Marie Backhaus, was born April 8, 1898, in Grand Meadow township, Clayton county, the daughter of John and Minnie (Dahms) Backhaus. She was baptized on June 16, 1898, at St. John Lutheran Church, Luana, and was confirmed in the Lutheran faith on March 31, 1912, at Luana.

She attended the Grand Meadow rural school. She was united in marriage with Henry Christofferson on January 23, 1913. Soon after their marriage, her husband was called to serve in the armed services of his country, where he served for about one year. After his release from the service, they began farming. They farmed southeast of Monona for many years. In 1949, they retired to Monona.

Mrs. Christofferson underwent surgery several times in recent years. She went to the hospital again in October and had been there since. She passed away on Sunday, December 18, at the age of 68 years, eight months and 10 days.

She had been an active member of St. Paul's Ev. Lutheran Church, Monona. She had also been an active member of the Women of the Church, the American Legion Auxiliary and the Women's Relief Corps.

Surviving are her husband; one brother, Arnold Backhaus of Postville; two sisters, Mrs. Louis (Viola) Miller of Luana and Mrs. Elmer (Marie) Schutte of Postville, and one half-sister, Mrs. Alvin (Amanda) Johanningmeier of Monona.

Preceding her in death were her parents and two half-brothers, Verni Engle and Albert Backhaus.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, December 21, at 10:30 a.m. in St. Paul Ev. Lutheran Church, Monona, with the Rev. R. E. Langholz and Rev. Fred Darnauer officiating. Burial was in Monona cemetery.
