Anna Casten
Anna Caroline Augusta Casten, daughter of Charles and Wilhelmina (Sass) Schara, was born Aug. 16, 1895, in Bloomfield township, Winneshiek County, Iowa. She died Sunday, Oct. 17, 1993 at the Good Samaritan Center in Postville, Iowa. She 98.
She was baptized Oct. 20, 1895 by the Rev. J. Apple and confirmed March 20, 1910 by Rev. William Paulsen, at St. John Lutheran Church, Luana, Iowa. She attended country school in Bloomfield Township and graduated from Castalia High School. On Jan. 11, 1921 she was married to Leonard Wilhelm Casten at the Zion Lutheran Church at Castalia. To this union, one daughter was born. After their wedding, the Leonard Castens lived and worked about two and a half years on the Casten home farm south of Postville. They then moved to Postville, where Mr. Casten and his brother, John O. Casten, opened an oil business. Mr. Casten retired late in 1957. Mrs. Casten and her husband enjoyed over 25 winters in Mesa, Ariz., where they met and established many good friends.
Anna is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Leonard, who died July 11, 1993; four brothers, William, Fred, Herman, and Albert Schara; two sisters, Bertha at age 15 and Caroline (Lena) Kamp Perry, as well as a brother, John and two sisters, Louise and Elsie, who all three died in infancy.
Surviving are her daughter Marian and her husband Paul Schutte of Postville; four grandsons, Stephan and his wife Carol Sue of Clear Lake, Iowa; Peter and his wife Sheri of Irvine, Calif.; Kim and his wife Barbara of Postville; and Christopher of Chandler, Ariz.; two granddaughters, Carol and her husband Jeffrey White of Central City, Iowa and Susan and her husband Stephan Brackett of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; nine great grandchildren; and four step great grandchildren, Brandy, Michel and Hollie Goltz and Jessica Kruse, all of Postville.
Anna was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Castalia and transferred her membership to St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville after her wedding. She was an honor roll member of WELCA at St. Paul's, and had served as its president. She served on the Women's Auxiliary of the Postville Hospital for many years, and helped to organize the hospital food stand at the Big Four Fair. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and a Post Matron.
Anna loved people, cooking, fishing, and playing cards. Her enjoyment of gardening was evident in the premium roses she grew, in which she took great pride. She especially loved her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Oct. 20, 1993 at 11 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church, the Rev. Charles W. Miller officiating. Casket bearers were Stephan L. Schutte, Kim P. Schutte, Christopher L. Schutte, Stephan P. Brackett, Jeffrey S. White, and Vernon Kamp. The Schutte Funeral Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery.
