Funeral services for William C. Hughes, age 25, of San Antonio, Texas, formerly of Waukon, Iowa, were held Monday, April 1, at 10 a.m. at Martin Funeral Chapel in Waukon, Iowa. Elder Gary Johnson conducted the services. Burial, with military rites by Ft. Sheridan Honor Detachment of Ft. Sheridan, Illinois, was in Oakland Cemetery in Waukon, Iowa. Casket bearers were Allen Wykoff, Shane Hillenga, Bill Starnes, Kenneth McDowell, Randy Erion, and Orville Hogen. Honorary pallbearers were Richard Gearhart, Dennis Schulte, Melvin Steffenson, and Bobby Miller.

William C. Hughes, son of Richard L. and Shirley R. (Starnes) Hughes, was born March 30, 1965 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He was a 1983 graduate of Waukon High School. He attended several colleges, including Mankato State College, in Mankato, Minnesota, where he was in the paramed program. In 1986, Bill joined the Army and spent his first tour as a medic. He was active in emergency medical programs, as well as the LPN training. He was an EMT instructor in the service. On March 7, 1991 he graduated with distinguished honors from the LPN program at Ft. Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas where he was stationed. He was set for promotion from sergeant to staff sergeant, which was finalized on Friday, March 29, 1991. Bill had lived in Ft. Dix, New Jersey and Ft. Benjamin Harrison, Indiana before moving to Texas.

Bill and Cindy L. Dixon were married January 18, 1991 in San Antonio, Texas. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints. Bill was involved with volunteer work with the youth in the areas where he lived, including coaching athletic teams. He also enjoyed bowling and tinkering with cars.

William C. Hughes died Wednesday, March 25, 1991 in San Antonio, Texas. He is survived by his wife, Cindy, and a step-son, Bobby Miller, both of San Antonio, Texas; his father, Richard Hughes of Waukon, Iowa, his mother, Shirley Hughes of Waterloo, Iowa; a sister, Diane (Shane) Hillenga of Des Moines, Iowa and his grandmother, Ruth Kunik of Redding, California; 2 nephews and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
