Robert Hall

Robert J. Hall, 81, of Portland, OR, and formerly of Waukon, died Wed., Dec. 6, 2000, at Golden Acres Retirement Center in Portland following a sudden illness.

Robert was born July 12, 1919, in Preston, MN, to Charles and Mary (Solon) Hall. He attended schools in Fountain, MN, and Waukon.

He joined the Civilian Conservation Corps and worked in western Iowa.

On July 15, 1941, Robert was inducted into the U.S. Army and served in Alaska, Germany, and the Philippines. He was a prisoner of war in Germany until he engineered an escape. He was instrumental in helping sick and wounded prisoners escape with him. With help from local people, they moved through the German countryside until they joined the Allied Forces. Robert was discharged from the Army on Dec. 19, 1945.

Robert settled on the west coast and was employed by major lumber companies as a high rigger. Upon retirement, he made his home in Portland. In 1998 he moved to Golden Acres Retirement Center.

Robert is survived by a brother, Kenneth Hall of Waukon; and five nephews and six nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Esther Butler of Chatfield, MN, and Ruth Waters of Modesto, CA; and two brothers, James of Waukon and John of Spokane, WA.
