Death of Joseph Whalen

Again have the sons and daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Whalen, deceased, of French Creek township, been called upon to mourn the loss of a member of the family. Less than two months ago a brother, Peter Whalen, was called to the beyond, and Monday of last week another brother, Joseph Whalen, answered the final summons. He had suffered with asthma for some years and succumbed to an attack of the grippe after a few days illness.

Joseph Whalen was born in French Creek township forty years ago and his entire life was passed in that community. He was an honest, industrious man, a good friend and neighbor and held in high esteem by all who knew him.

He is survived by five brothers and five sisters as follows: Thomas, Hope, Idaho; Lawrence, Plaza, N.D.; Mrs. M. G. Tenney and John of Minneapolis; James of Juliette, Idaho; Mrs. John Ray, New York City; Mrs. Anton O’Donnell of French Creek township; Mrs. James Riley, Mrs. John Connors and George of Waukon.

The funeral was held at the Lycurgus church Thursday forenoon and after requiem mass celebrated by the pastor Rev. Father McNamara, he was laid to rest beside the other members of the family in the Lycurgus cemetery.

--- --- ---

Note: Joseph was the son of Thomas and Eliza Shortt Whalen. Mrs. M. G. Tenney is Elizabeth Whalen, Mrs. John Ray is Rose/a Whalen, Mrs. John Connor is Anna Whalen, Mrs. James Riley is Johanna Whalen, and Mrs. Anton O’Donnell is Alvaretta Whalen.

Clipping has a date of April 19 on it. Woodmansee “Burial Grounds of Allamakee County” give his dates as 1886-12 April 1926. In Joseph’s World War I Registration Card he gives his date of birth as 27 May 1882. I am not sure if the date “April 19” on the newspaper clipping is the date of the paper or his death. As it’s a family record, perhaps it was the 19th, and the stone looks like the 12th.
