Funeral services for Leonard Hanson, age 75, of West Union, Iowa were held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday February 17 at Holy Name Catholic Church in West Union, Iowa. Burial was in Lycurgus Cemetery, rural Waukon, Iowa. Burnham-Wood Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Leonard was born December 21, 1923 in Waukon, Iowa to Otto and Elsie (Barth) Hanson. He graduated from Waukon High School in 1941 and attended Waukon Junior College. During World War II Leonard served in the United States Navy. On October 2, 1950 he married Mary Jane Riley at St. Patrick's Catholic Church rectory in Waukon, Iowa. They operated a grocery store in Waukon for 16 years. In 1964 they moved to West Union, Iowa where he worked as a route salesman for City Laundry of Oelwein, Iowa. Leonard retired in 1989. He was a member and Past Commander of the Waukon American Legion Post, Past Allamakee County Commander, and Past Commander of the 4th District American Legion.

Leonard died Sunday February 14, 1999 at his home in West Union, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, and a son-in-law Frank McDonough.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Jane; 3 sons, Michael (Deb) Hanson of Mason City, Iowa, Dave (Marlena) Hanson of Vinton, Iowa, and Jim (Kara) Hanson of Waterloo, Iowa; 6 daughters, Susan McDonough and Nancy Hanson, both of West Union, Iowa, Linda (Larry) Graham of Eyota, Minnesota, Mary (Paul) Beltz of Oskaloosa, Iowa, Laurie (husband but his name was not included)Carolan of Lawler, Iowa and Peggy (Brian) Wurzer of Fredericksburg, Iowa; 14 grandchildren and 2 step-grandchildren.
