Contributor: Connie Ellis (DUNN FAMILY RESEARCHER)Robert Dean Leas, age 71, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Monday November 15, 1999 at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa following a heart attack. Funeral services are today, Wednesday, November 17 at 10 a.m. at Teahen Funeral Home in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Rev. Robert Ruppert officiating. Robert will also be honored with a military service. Burial will be in the Maple Hill "Big Foot" Cemetery in rural Rossville, Iowa. *NOTE: This cemetery is also called the Sencebaugh Cemetery*
Robert Dean Leas was born October 1, 1928 on the family farm in rural Waterville, Iowa, the son of Raymond Addison and Blanche (Hulse) Leas. He attended rural school at Linton township #16 in Allamakee County, Iowa. He was in the U.S. Army and was stationed in California for most of his service time. He moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa around 1960 where he worked for Quaker Oats for almost 30 years, retiring in 1990.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents, a brother George Leas and a sister, Melva Marie Leas who died at the age of 10 years; his cousins, George Lester Melcher, Wilma Cowell, Glenn Melcher, Amelia Walsh, Carl Melcher, John Melcher, and Arlene Hilleshiem.
He is survived by his cousins, Arden Melcher, Vernon Melcher, Noel Melcher, Ivan Melcher, and Joann McCraney, in addition to many other cousins living in Waukon, Iowa and Monona, Iowa. He will be missed by his special friends, Bruce and Wanda Sandhagen and Lamonte and Sharon Barton.
NOTE OF THE TRANSCRIBER: There were many first cousins living in the Allamakee County and Clayton County area on the Leas side of the family. Robert's father, Raymond Addison Leas was the son of George Andrew Leas and his mother was Sarah Ann (Thias) Leas. The brothers of Raymond Leas included William Wesley Leas, Elmac Jermiah Leas, Harry Orville Leas,and Arthur Floyd Leas; and his sisters were Iva Estelle (Leas) Miehe, Hazel Marie (Leas) Rogge, and Effie Ann (Leas) Melcher, who was the mother of the above named Melcher cousins. Besides the children of Effie, Harry's children and Arthur's children lived in the area at the time of Robert's death.
