Gladys Mabel (Middendorf) Richards 1921 - 2011

Gladys Mabel (Middendorf) Richards, age 90, of New Albin, Iowa, died Wednesday, April 13, 2011, at Thornton Manor Care Center, Lansing, Iowa.

She was born Jan. 15, 1921, on the family farm in Winnebago Valley, Winnebago Township, Houston County, Minn., to Walter and Ida (Roeber) Middendorf, Sr. Gladys was baptized, confirmed, and married at St. Peter’s Church in New Albin. On Sept. 25, 1940, she married Bernet Fredrick Richards and together they had four sons. Gladys was a homemaker until 1967 when they moved into New Albin. She then worked at the New Albin City Meat Market and the Lansing Button Factory until her retirement in 1985.

On April 15, 1985, Bernet preceded Gladys in death. Gladys was a member of the VFW Post 5630 Ladies Auxiliary of New Albin.

Survivors include three sons, Dave (Sue) Richards and Tom (Shirley) Richards, both of New Albin, and Scott (Debbie) Richards, Sandwich, Ill.; one daughter-in-law, Alice Richards, Sheridan, Ill.; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; one sister, Iris Sires, New Albin; three sisters-in-law, Ruby (Gaylord) Schoh, Waukon, Iowa; Harriet Peske, Washington State, and Carmen Middendorf, Eitzen, Minn.; two brothers-in-law, Jim (Barb) Richards, New Albin and Joe (Nancy) Richards, Sundance, Wyo.

In addition to her husband Gladys was preceded in death by a son, Jerry; one brother, Walter Middendorf, Jr.; three brothers-in-law, Cleon Sires, Gene Peske, and Bob (Helen) Richards; one nephew, Todd Schoh; and two nieces, Laura Richards and Christi Middendorf.

Funeral services will be Monday, April 18, 2011, at 2 p.m. at St. Peter’s Church, New Albin, Iowa. Pastor William J. Reese will officiate. Burial will be in St. Peter’s Memorial Cemetery. Friends may call at the New Albin Community Center on Sunday from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. with a VFW Ladies Auxiliary service at 6 p.m. Friends may also call at the church on Monday from 1 p.m. until the time of service.

Jandt-Fredrickson Funeral Home, Caledonia, Minn., is in charge of arrangements.
