LaMarr Kappmeyer

La Marr Kappmeyer, 87, of Harpers Ferry passed away Monday, April 11 at Prairie Du Chien Memorial Hospital in Prairie du Chien, WI after a brief illness. Graveside services will be conducted June 18 at Woodlawn Cemetery, Oelwein. Included in the service will be military rites for her husband, Jack (a former POW in Germany, WWII), who preceded her in death in February of 2006 and whose cremains will be laid to rest with La Marr.
La Marr was born in West Union November 14, 1923 to John C. and Beulah Monnahan. She was a graduate of Oelwein High School and worked in Oelwein at the First National Bank and the Iowa State Gas Company. July 12 she married John “Jack” Kappmeyer, and they made their home in Maynard, where Jack spent many years in the West Central School system as both a teacher and administrator.
Lansing was the Kappmeyer’s next stop, where La Marr continued her accounting and bookkeeping skills at the local bank. Eventually, La Marr and Jack purchased their retirement home in Harpers Ferry, where they spent much of their lives fishing and enjoying the beauty of the Mississippi River. La Marr had a love for reading, crossword puzzles and feeding the birds and cats in the neighborhood. Special care was given to her poodle, Beau IV. Where ever La Marr went, so went Beau.
She is survived by a brother, John Monnahan of Oro Valley, AZ; and a sister, Kitty Ford of Rosemount, MN; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack; her younger sister, Betty Rice of Jacksonville, IL; and her father and mother, John C. Monnahan and Beulah Monnahan, both of Oelwein.
La Marr and Jack were very popular throughout northeast Iowa, and it is asked that those who read this obituary pass on the date of services so that all their friends will have a chance to pay their last respects.
