Cloy Kuhse

Cloy Victor Lloyd Kuhse, 61, of Postville died Sunday, May 1, 2011 at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse, WI from complications of a pulmonary embolism. Funeral Services were held Friday, May 6 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville, with Rev. Steve Brackett officiating. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery in Postville with military honors.
Cloy was born August 10, 1949 in Postville to Lorenz and Ivanelle (Becker) Kuhse. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Postville. He attended Postville Community Schools, graduating with the class of 1967. Following graduation, Cloy enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and served his country in Vietnam.
December 20, 1969 Cloy was united in marriage with his loving wife, Ardys (Ardie) Diane Saboe, at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Eldorado. Three children were born to this union.
Cloy and Ardie raised their three children in rural Postville. Cloy farmed his entire life on the family farm, milking dairy cows for 33 years, caring for his land, doing custom chopping, custom windrowing and dehorning cattle. In addition to crop farming, Cloy worked as a claims adjuster for Winneshiek Mutual Insurance Company, Decorah. In 2009, Cloy was elected as an Allamakee County Supervisor, taking the position of the County Chairman in 2011.
Cloy was a past active member of the Postville Ag Industry Board, Investment club, ASCS Committee, Allamakee County Republicans, Amvets, American Legion, Color Guard and Post Township trustee. He took an active role and enjoyed his Supervisor Committee assignments: Economic Development Executive Board, County Farm, County Conservation Board, T-21 Advisory Board and many other county committees. He was also a licensed Bail Bondsman for northeast Iowa. Over the years Cloy has been an active member of his church, serving on Church Council, chairing the church Finance Committee and singing in the church choir.
Cloy enjoyed spending time with his family and treasured any time spent with his grandsons. Cloy always had a smile to share, a hug to encourage, energy to dance, and a way of finding trouble with his Cherry Valley friends. He enjoyed Cubs baseball, Pirate athletics, time at the river, special trips with friends, pinochle club, bowling, golfing, ice fishing, deer hunting, a quick card game at Club 51, reading a book for pleasure or learning, and in younger years roller skating and horseback riding.
Cloy was the one who always had the right thing to say at the right moment. A call to him and you’d have the advice you were seeking, the dependability you were relying on, the joke needed to lighten your day, or the answer needed when you had any question.
Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Ardie; three children, Kyle (Kristie) Kuhse of Waverly, Jodi (Jim) Janssen of Cedar Falls, and Kraig (Hilary) Kuhse of Melbourne; four grandsons, Brody and Brock Kuhse, Bo Janssen, and Jarett Bunting; one sister, Dorothy (Wally) Embretson of Newhall; his father and mother in-law, Arnold (Sam) and Doris (Helgerson) Saboe of West Union; brothers- and sisters-in-law, Marcia (LeRoy) Soppe of West Union and Dorene (Eugene) Dietzenbach of Mount Pleasant; nieces and nephews; four special aunts and many cousins.
Cloy was preceded in death by his parents, Lorenz and Ivanelle Kuhse; one brother, Allen Kuhse; one sister in-law, Elizabeth (Ann) Kuhse; and one nephew, Gary Kuhse.

Schutte-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Postville assisted the family.
