Karen Kay Unertl, age 57, died Monday, April 6, 1998 at her home in Lansing, Iowa. Funeral services were held Thursday, April 9 at 1 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Lansing. The Rev. Tom Mattson officiated. Burial was in Bethlehem Cemetery, rural Postville, Iowa. Martin Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Casket bearers were Rodney and Evonne Bloxham, Ken and Kathy Strub, Buzz and Helen Libbey, and Gene and Janet Thias. Honorary bearers were Justin Shepard, Josh Koch, Sandra Fish, and Jane Miene.

Karen was born February 21, 1941 in Waukon, Iowa to Reuben and Norma (Shafer) Kruger. Karen attended Ludlow #1 rural school, graduated from Waukon High School in 1958 and attended Young's Beauty School in Waterloo, Iowa. On July 11, 1959 she married Donald Ewing at Forest Mills United Methodist Church. She lived in Waterloo after her marriage until returning to Lansing in 1979. On April 4, 1987 Karen married Charles Unertl at the United Methodist Church in Lansing. She worked in auto upholstering and also at Northern Engraving in Lansing. The past eight years she had worked at Milty's Restaurant in Lansing.

Karen was a member of the United Methodist Church in Lansing, a former member of Lansing Lioness Club, VFW and American Legion auxiliaries, and did some volunteer work at a care facility while living in Waterloo, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her father.

She is survived by her mother of Waukon; her husband, Charles; a son, Steve (Patti Jo) Ewing of Lansing, Iowa; 2 daughters, Dawn (Jake) Zeimet and Deneen Milton, all of Lansing, Iowa; a step-daughter, Sandy (Scott) Hamann of Ionia, Iowa; 9 grandchildren, 1 step-grandchild, 2 step-great-grandchildren; and 1 brother, James Kruger of Waukon.
