Funeral services were held Saturday, February 8 at 2 p.m. at Martin Brothers Funeral Home in Waukon, Iowa for Michael J. Barthell, who died Wednesday, February 5, 1964 at the Veteran's Administration Hospital at Iowa City, Iowa. In accordance with the wishes of the deceased, a very simple service was held. A poem, "The Garden of Proserpine" was read by Howard Sullivan, Jr., a friend. Full military rites were conducted by the Waukon American Legion of which Barthell was a member, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Pallbearers were Oliver Fay, Harlan Magnusson, Bob Stillwell, Truman Slitor, John Campbell, and Lynn Morrow.

Michael was born October 13, 1913 in Waukon, Iowa, the son of Michael J. and Jessie (Stillwell) Barthell. He was educated in local schools, including Waukon High School and Waukon Junior College. Later he attended an art school in Des Moines, Iowa. He served in the United States Army during World War II, stationed at Camp Crowder in Missouri. A lifetime resident of Waukon, he operated the "Joplin Joe" sign shop until the time of his illness.

He had three sisters who survive: Charlotte "Lottie" Ryan of Jewell, Iowa, Barbara Nierling of Mabel, Minnesota, and Diedre Mastro of Chicago, Illinois.

In addition to a large number of local residents, the following out of town persons attended: Richard Stillwell, Cedar Falls, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Harry Neshiem, Decorah, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. James Ryan, Jewell, Iowa; Dr. James Ryan, Des Moines, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. George Nierling, Mabel, Minnesota, Mrs. Diedre Mastro, Chicago, Illinois; Mr. and Mrs. George Ferring, Lansing, Iowa and James Molumby, Decorah, Iowa.
