Funeral services for Mr. Hill were held in the Community Presbyterian Church, Postville, Monday, April 20, at 2:00 p.m. with the Reverend Dick Harberts officiating. Interment was in the Postville Cemetery.
Louis Hill is survived by his wife and son, Louis Hill, Jr. of Cedar Rapids.
Louis L. Hill was born in Nashua, on October 19, 1887, and died April 17, 1970, in Postville. He was the son of Albert E. Hill and Effie (Hinman) Hill.
After graduating from Nashua High School in 1905, he attended the University of Iowa, where he majored in economics, receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree there in 1909.
After graduation, he was superintendent of schools in Monona. In 1912 he was married to Harriet S. Leui of Postville.
From school superintendency he became associated with Allyn and Bacon, Boston firm of publishers of high school and college text books. For eight years he was in charge of sales, first in Nebraska, the Black Hills section of South Dakota, and eastern Colorado, and later was sales manager for the state of Ohio.
In the fall of 1918 Mr. and Mrs. Hill returned to Postville to make their home, and for three years Mr. hill took over the management of the William Leui farms.
In 1922 he bought the interest of L. H. Schroeder in the hardware firm of Schroeder and Brenner, the store then becoming Brenner and Hill Hardware. One and one half years later he bought out Mr. Brenner and the store was then re-named, the Louis L. Hill Hardware.
In 1934 he became president of the Iowa Retail Hardware Association. In 1939 he was elected to the Board of Governors of the National Retail Hardware Association, and in 1948 he was made president of that association.
In 1953 he sold his Postville business to John Kittleson, but remained active in civic affairs. He served on the board of directors of the Postville Schools for a number of years and as chairman of the county board of education for twenty-seven years. He served twice as president of the Postville Commercial Club and as vice president, and then president, of the Postville chapter of Kiwanis. Since 1951 he has been a member of the Postville Library Board.
For a number of years he was a director of the Postville State Bank.
He was a member of Postville Community Presbyterian Church, and for several years was a trustee.
He was a Mason, belonging to Brotherly Love Lodge No. 204 A. F. & A.M.; the Decorah Scottish Rite Club, Iowa Consistory; the Cedar Rapids Consistory; and the El Kahir Shrine Temple.
