Harold E. Lang, 84, of Waukon, died Monday, May 5, 2003, at Northgate Care Center
in Waukon following a lengthy illness. Funeral services were held Friday, May 9
at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon, with Rev. Lynn G. Groe officiating. Burial with
graveside military rites was in Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Martin Funeral Home in
Waukon assisted the family with arrangements.
Harold Edward was born April 26, 1919, in Brownsville, Minn., the son of Simonand Gladys (Derr) Lang. Following his schooling, he worked for a time as a truck
driver. He married Grace Hill. From 1943 to 1945, Harold served as a PFC in the
U.S. Army. He was assigned to the Anti Tank Company of the 16th Infantry and saw
action in Normandy as well as other parts of Central Europe. Upon his return from
the service, he farmed with his step-father, Severin Severson, in rural Waukon.
On March 15, 1946, he married Gladys Bublitz in Strawberry Point. They farmedtogether in Frankville Township until 1973, when he moved to Waukon and began
operating Lang's Welding. The past five years he has been a resident of Northgate
Care Center. Harold was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon. He
enjoyed fishing and visiting with friends. Survivors include a son, Richard
(Louise) Lang of Marion, Iowa; a daughter, Marge (Stan Baldwin) Hesse of Ennis,
Texas; a step-daughter, Shirley (Ronald) Hesse of Postville; six grandchildren;
and six step-grandchildren, as well as several great-grandchildren and
step-great-grandchildren; a sister, Dorothy Miller of Janesville, Iowa; along
with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his
wife, Gladys; a step-grandson; a sister, Annabelle Albert; a brother, Ray Lang;
and two half-brothers, Elmer Severson and Everett Waters. Casketbearers were
local veterans.
