Gerene Martindale

Funeral services for Gerene Martindale were held Thursday, March 27, 2003, at 11:00 a.m. in St. Paul Lutheran church at Postville, Iowa. The Reverend James Allison officiated. The organist was Joann Martins with solos by Kim Schutte. The Casket Bearers were: Don Martindale, Peter Martindale, Justin Martindale, Marc Martindale, Greg Carman, Garry Carman, Gerald "Pete" Meyer.

Honorary Casket Bearers were: Tom Beavers, Merle Cook, Chad Olson. The Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery.

Gerene Christine Anna (nee Schultz) Martindale, the daughter of Fred C. and Emma (nee Walther) Schultz, was born April 2, 1913, in Grand Meadow Township, Clayton county, near Postville, Iowa. She passed away Sunday, March 23, 2003, in St. Mary's Hospital at Rochester, Minnesota. She had reached the age of 89 years, 11 months, and 21 days.

She was baptized June 29, 1913, by the Reverend R. Kuehne and confirmed August 14, 1926, by the Reverend E. T. Finck, both in St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville. Gerene attended the rural school, Grand Meadow Township School No. 7, and was graduated from the Postville High School in 1930. She taught in several rural schools, including the McNeil (McKinley) School, the Glesne School near St. Olaf, South Grove School, Grand Meadow No. 7, then in the Giard School and the public school in Guttenberg and Elgin.

Gerene was married to Robert Leland Martindale on September 4, 1946, by the Reverend Frederick R. Ludwig in St. Paul Lutheran Church. To this union two sons were born, Ben and Alan. Following their marriage, Gerene was a substitute teacher in the Postville Public School and was a teacher's aide.

Gerene received the P. E. A. Friend of Education Award on September 24, 1987. She taught Sunday School and Bible School in St. Paul Lutheran Church and was a member of the Women of the ELCA. She was a member of the Monday Club and the Historical Society. Gerene loved sports, especially football and basketball.

Preceding her in death are her parents, her husband, Robert, who died May 25, 1988, a sister, Helen Beaver, who died July 17, 1995, and a brother- and sister-in-law, A. Burr and Helene Cook.

Surviving are her sons, Ben and his wife, Astrid, of Wadsworth, Illinois, and Alan and his wife, Lisa, of Champaign, Illinois, five grandchildren, Katie, Justin, and Briana of Wadsworth, Illinois and Meghan and Marc of Champaign, Illinois, two brothers-in-law, Tom Beavers and wife, Lillian of Indianapolis, Indiana, and Don Martindale and wife, Iva of Oelwein, Iowa, many nephews and nieces and many friends.
