Harvey was born November 14, 1922 in Postville to Martin and Mamie (Warnholtz). He attended Postville and Lansing elementary schools. He left school after sixth grade and took a job to help support his family. Harvey served in the Navy from 1943 through 1946, where his ship was involved in numerous major military campaigns in the Pacific. He attained the rank of Radar Operator Second Class where he was involved with the early years of radar technology.
January 10, 1942, he married Mary Sue Whalen. He and Sue moved backed to Lansing soon after they were married, and he became very involved in the community. He started working with Cyril Murphy at the Lansing Garage in 1957. Later, he purchased the business with his partners, Al Schultz and Jack Weber, until he and Jack relocated to Waukon Implement in 1984. Harvey, a true salesman, met many friends throughout the area and became very close to his customers and employees.
Harvey loved living in the small, close-knit river community of Lansing. He spent his free time with family and friends playing cards, boating, storytelling, and enjoying the people around him. He was involved in Venetian Night, VFW, Lansing Fire Department, Catholic Foresters, Area 1 Community College Board, Allamakee County Fair, St. George School Board, and Immaculate Conception Church.
After the passing of his wife, Sue, in 1988, Harvey married Rosalie Weber. They moved to Lakeland, FL in 1989, where he made his home until this past January. He loved the heat and sunshine in Florida.
He is survived by his wife, Rosalie; his six children, Laurie Long of La Crosse, WI, David (Terrie Wilborn) of Ackley, Dan (Genette Mohn) of Lansing, Martin (Faye Pladsen) of Lansing, Lisa (Michael) Welsh of Lansing, and Michelle Umberger of Madison, WI; his 21 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and his siblings, Kenneth, Kay (Rodney) Olson, Leo, Marion (Duane) Meier, and Marilyn (Bill) Macke.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary Sue; his daughter, Linda Jean (Donald) Hammel; his brothers, Dorf, Eugene, Roger, Lynn, and Fredrick; and his sister, Delilah Palmer.
The family would appreciate any stories in writing that anyone may have of Harvey so a book can be made for his family.
