Darlene Schlitter, 86, of Riverdale, Iowa, died Thursday, December 9, 2010 at Trinity Hospital in Bettendorf.

Visitation will begin at 4:00 P.M. followed by the Funeral Service at 7:00 P.M., Monday, December 13, 2010 at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home in Bettendorf. Graveside services will be conducted at 1:00 P.M., Tuesday, December 14 at Sixteen Cemetery in rural Monona, Iowa. Memorials may be made to the family.

Darlene was born December 2, 1924 in Harpers Ferry, Iowa, the daughter of John R. & Lena M. (Bennett) Chapin. She was united in marriage to Fritz P. Schlitter on August 18, 1942 in Kahoka, Missouri. He preceded her in death on January 22, 2004.

Darlene was retired from Long’s Manufacturing. Her true enjoyment came from spending time with her family, as well as sewing, making ceramics and shopping. She loved hummingbirds, deer and enjoyed observing all wildlife, except small rodents, especially mice.

Those left to honor her memory include her son Buster Schlitter of Riverdale; thirteen grandchildren; twenty-two great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; her sister Anita VanBlaricom of Davenport; and her son-n-law, Terry Johnson of Coal Valley, Illinois.

In addition to her husband, Fritz, Darlene was preceded in death by her parents; her daughters Patricia Oaks and Linda Johnson; her sister Dorothy Chapin; and her brothers Donald Chapin and Leslie Chapin.
