Miss M. Harriet McKinley was born in Grand Meadow township on Easter Sunday, March 31st, 1872, and died on Sunday, Oct 22, 1899.

Her early life was spent on the farm in Grand Meadow, where she attended school after which she spent a number of years as a student at Decorah Institute, going from there to Valparaiso, Ind., where she attended the Normal school.

In 1894 the family moved to Iowa City, Iowa where they have since resided, and where her death occurred. It is with a feeling of sincere sorrow that we chronicle this death. While not unlooked for in the not distant future still the sudden termination of her sickness came as a sorrowful surprise to her many friends. She was a young lady of exemplary character. Possessed of much personal magnetism she gathered around her a host of admiring friends who will ever hold her name in loving remembrance.

She was a member of the Catholic church and as her life was governed by its last hours were lightened by its consolation and she laid down her life without a murmur, trusting to the Providence of Him who doeth all things well.

In the home there is a vacancy that can never be filled but they have the consolation of knowing that hers was a life well spent and by being called so young she has escaped the trials of a wayward world and her bark is at rest on the other shore. "Her sun went down while it was yet day but not behind the cloud for it melted into the pure light of heaven."

Her friends were untiring in their attentions during her sickness and the floral offerings were many and very beautiful. The funeral occurred at Clermont and her remains were followed to their resting place by a large concourse of mourning friends. "Servant of God, well done! Rest for Thy loved employ—The battle fought, the victory won, Enter Thy master’s joy."
