John Waters, 73, Passed Away on Last Wednesday
Had Been Active in Local Business and Political Life Many Years
John Waters, son of George and Sophia Waters was born near FrankvIlle, on August 29,1860. When a boy he joined the Frankville Presbyterian church and was interested in the support of the Postville Community church. His early life was one of industry on the farm, His parents being among the early pioneers of this section. On February 4, 1885, he was united in marriage to Miss Millie Early and to this union one son was born, who died in infancy. He was a partner in the hardware firm of Waters & Nicolay, later a successful manager of the Postville Farmers Co-operative Society, a director of the Winneshiek County Farmers Mutual Insurance association, and for many years a director of the Citizens State Bank of Postville. In the year 1902 he was elected a Supervisor of Allamakee county and served in that capacity for six years, and at the time of his death was Inheritance Tax Appraiser, and held many other offices of trust. Personally he was genial and companionable. which added to his popularity, and being a man. of good business judgment he was often called upon for advice. He had been in failing health for some time and on July 5th went to the University hospital at Iowa City for treatment, but despite all that medical skill and loving hands could do he passed on to his reward on August 8, 1934, at, 3:00 p. m. His death marked the passing of the last, of a family of eleven, one sister and ten brothers. The struggle was valiantly made and the end bravely met. He is survived by his wife, numerous relatives and a host of friends. The funeral services were held from the Community Presbyterian church on Saturday afternoon. August 11th, with Rev. R. F. Galloway officiating. The large assemblage present and the, beautiful floral offerings all attested the high esteem In which he was held as a citizen, neighbor and friend. Interment was made in Postville cemetery.
