Memorial Hospital in Decorah following a lengthy illness. Private family graveside services

Adelbert Lee Brainard was born October 13, 1920, in rural Luana, Iowa, the son of Amos and
Cora (Ewing) Brainard. He attended the "Red School" and "#13" rural Allamakee County
schools. Following school, he worked in a stone quarry and cut tie logs for a sawmill in
addition to helping various area farmers. From 1942-1945 he served as a Tech 5 in the US
Army Signal Corps where he earned six Bronze Stars and saw duty in the South Pacific. After
the service he returned to rural Luana and bought a farm. On February 9, 1948, he married
Nell Gordon in Elkader. They farmed together for many years, operating a dairy for a time
and raising hogs and crops. Adelbert was a member of the Disabled American Veterans. He
enjoyed the outdoors and loved to spend time roaming the hills of northeast Iowa. He was an
avid hunter and fisherman, hunted ginseng, and liked to garden and cut wood. In recent
years, he had become an accomplished woodworker. He also enjoyed spending time with his
grand- and great-grandchildren. Survivors include his wife, Nell, of rural Luana; a
daughter, Sandra (Vernon) Gavle of Decorah; three sons, Gilbert (Barbara) and Tony (fiancé
Nikki), both of Monona, and Richard (Gwen) of Luana; 11 grandchildren; 16
great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Alice and Irene Brainard, both of Waukon. He was
preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Beulah Bowers; and four brothers, Charles,
Clarence, Milo, and Forrest Brainard.
