Rites Held For Earl R. Hammel

Funeral services for Earl Hammel were held in the Community Presbyterian church, Postville on Friday, April 26, at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. Curtis Webster and the Rev. Dick Harberts officiating. Interment was in the Frankville cemetery.

Earl R. Hammel, son of John Hammel and Caroline Harris Hammel, was born April 28, 1892, in Post township, Allamakee county on a farm. He attended the West Grove school. He has lived his entire life in the surrounding community of Postville.

On November 12 1912, he was united in marriage to Angie Folsom. They farmed for 48 years in Allamakee and Winneshiek counties. In 1958 they retired and lived in the community of Frankville. They are the parents of three sons: Leo, Layton, and Dean.

Mr. Hammel was baptized and became a confirmed member of the Bethel United Brethren Church formerly located northeast of Postville.

After an extended period of ill health, he passed away at the Community Memorial Hospital in Postville on Tuesday, April 23, 1968, at the age of 75 years, 11 months and 25 days.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Hammel; three sisters, Mrs. Charles (Stella) Cook of Postville; Mrs. Frank (Ruby) Lawson of Postville; and Mrs. Andrew (Verna) Stockman of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; three brothers, Ralph of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Charles of Milwaukee, and Leonard of Hot Springs, Arkansas. He is survived by his wife and three sons: Leo of Decorah, Layton of Cresco, and Dean of Milwaukee. Also surviving are four sisters: Mrs. Lee (Bertha) Folsom of Postville, Mrs. Sherman (Gusta) Lawson of Postville, Mrs. La Rue (Ruth) Webster of Forest Mills and Mrs. Francis (Pearl) McDonald of San Diego, California. He is further survived by 16 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, other relatives, and a host of friends.
