Contributor: Connie Ellis (Not related)Funeral services for Abbie Dunning were held Tuesday, March 11, 1986 at 11 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church, Luana, Iowa. Rev. Ted Ager officiated. Schultz Funeral Home of Monona, Iowa was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery. Pallbearers were Donald Cook, Robert Cook, Paul Cook, Larry Melaas, Dale Linderbaum, Douglas Drahn, Philip Hofer, and Eric Olson.
Abbie was born May 2, 1892 at Hardin, Iowa to Louis B. and Mary (Swenson) Smith. She was baptized at the Hardin Church and confirmed at the Clermont Lutheran Church. She received her education in the rural schools. On February 15, 1916 she married Roy Dunning. The couple had 3 children. After their marriage, they farmed several places in the area. After her husband died, she and her son moved to Luana, Iowa in 1956. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran church in Luana and of the ALCW. On February 13, 1979 she became a resident of the Good Samaritan Center in Postville, Iowa. Abbie died on Saturday, March 8, 1986 at the Community Memorial Hospital in Postville, Iowa.
Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband Roy who died September 24, 1955, her son Leslie Dunning, a grandson Garry, who died in infancy, and her sister Eva Brainard.
Surviving are her daughters and sons-in-law, Mrs. Lawrence (Evelyn) Linderbaum of Monona, Iowa,and Mrs. LaVerne (Marian) Cook of Decorah, Iowa; 7 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Ethel Watts of Des Moines, Washington, and a host of nieces and nephews.
