Decease of a Pioneer Mother of Allamakee

Elizabeth Garvin was born in old Lancaster county, Penn., October 27, 1803, died September 19, 1896, aged 92 years, 10 months and 22 days. She was married to Aaron Powell July 13, 1826. She was converted at the age of twenty four and united with the Baptist church, and for more than sixty-eight year she has lived a consistent christian life. She was the mother of eight children. Mr. and Mrs. Powell moved from Indiana to Iowa in 1849, but before reaching this place he died; thus she was left a widow with six children to care for, and faithfully did she fulfill her duty as a mother, enduring all the hardships of a pioneer. She was united with the Rossville Baptist church as soon as it was organized. Three of her children are dead, one dying in infancy. Her oldest son, Lewis, gave his life for his country and Mrs. Ellen Clark died two years ago. The living children are Mrs. N.C. Brace of Rossville, Mrs. Mary Clark of Hardin, Mrs. Nancy Smith and David Powell of Franklin and Rachel McClintock of Rossville, who has never been separated from her mother, and husband, wife and grandchildren have given the tenderest care to their aged relative. She leaves a host of friends and the church has lost its oldest member.
