Saturday Rites For Mrs. Sarah Sheriff - Lansing

LANSING - Mrs. Sarah Sheriff, 84, died late Wednesday afternoon at the Waukon hospital where she was taken earlier in the day. She was born in October 1875 into the family of Stephen Burroughs. She was married to Charles Sheriff, who preceded her many years ago. Surviving are six sons, Jasper, Ed and Clarence of Lansing, Forest of Reno, Minn; Merlin and Roy of Dubuque. There are a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren; and one brother Ephriam Burroughs of Dorchester, the youngest of the family. Two sons have preceded their mother. Funeral services were on Saturday morining at IC church with burial in the English Bench cemetery.

Funeral services for Mrs. Sarah Sheriff, 84, will be Saturday at 9 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, the Rev. Henry Scharphoff officiating. Burial will be in English Bench Cemetery.

Mrs. Sheriff died Wednesday in a Waukon hospital.

She was born April 14, 1897.

Surviving are six sons, Clarence, Ed and Jasper, all of Lansing, Roy and Merlin of Dubuque, and Forrest of Reno, Minn.; and a brother, Ephriam Burroughs of Dorchester, Iowa.

Her husband and two sons preceded her in death.

Funeral services were held at Immaculate Conception Church in Lansing at nine o'clock Saturday morning for Mrs. Sarah Sheriff, 84, who passed away last Wednesday at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon, some few hours after her admittance. She had been ill for a short time at the Uren Nursing Home where she was a patient the past few months. Previous to that she had made her home with her son Ed.

As Sarah Burroughs she was born a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Burroughs in Union City township April 14, 1875 and almost 70 years ago was married to Charles Sheriff at DeSoto, Wis. They farmed in the Dorchester vicinity for many years and they were the parents of eight sons, two with their father preceding their mother in death. Their father passed away in 1928 and left to mourn the loss of a loving mother are, Ed, Jasper and Clarence, of Lansing; Merlin and Roy of Dubuque and Forrest of Reno, Minn. Other survivors include one brother, Ephraim Burroughs of Dorchester, 14 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren besides nieces and nephews by whom she was dearly loved, many coming to attend the wake or funeral.

Assistant pastor Father Condon offered the Mass of Requiem and Msgr. Henry Scharpoff said the final prayers at the gravesite in English Bench Cemetery where interment was made beside her loved ones gone before. Acting casket bearers were six nephews, Lawrence, Jesse, Richard, Garland and Alfred Burroughs and Leland Reeder.
