A mass of Christian burial was held at McDivitt Hauge Chapel in Minneapolis, Minnesota for Clare (May) Van Heel who died December 29, 1985 at the age of 69. Her daughter Margaret sang Ava Maria for the funeral mass. Her pallbearers were her grandsons Cpl Paul Olson of Camp Pendleton, California, Cpl. Daniel Kloeckner of St. Paul, Minnesota and nephews Joseph Mahowald of Pensacola, Florida, Robert Mahowald of Carver, Minnesota, Donald Schroeder of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Peter Scanlon of Richfield, Minnesota. Burial was at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery next to her husband Henry Van Heel who died December 1, 1985. They would have been married 46 years on December 30, 1985.

Clare was born in New Albin, Iowa, Allamakee County to George and Frances Margaret (Dailey) May on September 20, 1916. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers Orville May, Leon May,and Harold May; and a sister Mona May.

Clare is survived by 3 daughters; Mrs. Kenneth (Julie) Brunner of New Prague, Minnesota, Margaret Van Heel of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Mrs. Harold (Eileen) McCarthy of Merumas, Florida; 9 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers, Gerald May and his wife Nita of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Ronald May and his wife, Sylvia of Clayton, Iowa; and 3 sisters, Mrs. Aileen Collins of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Nita May and Doris Spinner, both of New Albin, Iowa. In addition she is survived by nieces and nephews. George B. May of Spartanburg, South Carolina, her nephew and son of the late Orville E. May also attended her funeral. Orville was a former mayor of New Albin, Iowa.
