Nancy May (Biggs) Canfield - 1859-1942

Nancy May "Nannie" (Biggs) Canfield, daughter of David and Elizabeth (Fitch) Biggs, was born at Volney on January 25, 1859 and died Monday evening, June 8, 1942 at the age of 83 years. She grew to young womanhood on the Biggs farm in Linton township, Allamakee County, Iowa, and for a time was a teacher in the rural schools of this county.

On December 11, 1886 she was united in marriage with William Canfield of Marshalltown, Iowa. In the fall of 1887 they moved to Pasadena, California where her husband died in 1889. She raised as her own child, her niece, Ula (Biggs) Morrow, daughter of T.S. Biggs of Bakersfield, California.

Nannie had lived in Rossville, Iowa for the past 30 years. She was a member of the Rossville Presbyterian Church which she had joined in November of 1922. Her funeral services were held at this church with burial in the Maple Hill Cemetery on the Big Foot road, rural Volney, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her two brothers, Clarence Biggs and John Franke Biggs; and two sisters, Nellie S. Biggs and Eugenia B. "Jennie" Skinner.

Those who mourn her loss are two brothers and three sisters: T.S. Biggs, Bakersfield, California, William Biggs of Monona, Iowa, Cora (Mrs.John W. Foote) and Mrs. Carrie Pufahl, both of rural route two Monona, Iowa, and Mrs. Ula Deemer of Tacoma, Washington.
