Gladys V. "Viola" Bakke, age 75, died Tuesday, April 11, 1989 in Veterans Memorial Hospital, Waukon, Iowa. Funeral services were held Friday, April 14, 1989 at 1:30 p.m. at West Paint Creek Synod Lutheran Church, rural Waterville, Iowa with Vicar Richard Tragasz and Pastor Mark DeGarmeaux officiating. Burial will be in West Paint Creek Synod Church cemetery. Martin Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Casket bearers were Randy, Kevin, and Dave Bakke, Scott and Bryan Willger, and Arlyn Fossum.

Gladys was born September 24, 1913 in Paint Creek Township, Allamakee County, Iowa to Theodore and LaVina (Knudtson) Fossum. She received her education in rural Allamakee County schools. On March 10, 1936 she was united in marriage to Theodore C. Bakke at her parent's home in rural Allamakee County. He died January 7, 1974.

She was a homemaker and farm wife. She was a lifelong resident of Allamakee County. Gladys was a member of West Paint Creek Synod Lutheran Church where she was a member of Pollyanna Homemakers Club and a volunteer worker at the Allamakee County Care Facility for many years.

Preceding her in death in addition to her husband were two sisters, Eleanor and Agnes and a brother Harold Fossum.

Survivors include a son, Donald Bakke of Waukon, Iowa; a daughter, Mrs. Herman (Lois) Willger of Waukon, Iowa; three sisters, Mrs. Herb (Leona) Vaughn, LaCrosse, Wisconsin, Mrs. Jack (Thelma) Holmes of Chaseburg, Wisconsin, and Mrs. Norma Curran, Lansing. Also surviving are five grandsons and six great-grandchildren.
