Melinda G. Bakkum died Friday, September 9, 1988 at the Good Samaritan Center in Waukon, Iowa at the age of 100. Funeral services were held Monday, September 12 at 1:30 p.m. at Old West Paint Creek Lutheran Church. Pastor Judd Larson conducted the services and burial was in the church cemetery. Martin Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Casket bearers were Barthell and Allan Bakkum, Raymond Riek, Harold Severson, Robert Hagen, Gordon Gilbertson, Otto Thorstenson, and Earl Sanderson. Honorary pallbearers were Nennor Steffenson, Melvin Anderson, Andrew Sorum, and Melvin Smedsrud.

Melinda was born April 11, 1888 in Center Township to Elarius and Ingeborg (Sevatson) Bakkum. She attended Bakkum country school and lived in rural Waukon until 1976 when she became a resident of the Good Samaritan Center. She was a member of Old West Paint Creek Church where she was active in ladies aid. She had been honored as a life member of ladies aid. She was also active in the Sangerfest singing group in years past. Sewing, baking, flower gardening, singing in the church choir and reading Norwegian were her favorite pastimes.

Preceding her in death were a brother Egbert Bakkum and three sisters, Ida, Selma, and Emily.

Surviving are a niece, Lorraine Anderson of rural Waterville, Iowa and three nephews, Everett Anderson of rural Waterville, Maynard Nelson of Trimont, Minnesota, and Rollin Nelson of Forest Lake, Minnesota.
