Iona Malinda Welzel
Iona Malinda Welzel, 89, Postville, Iowa, died Monday, December 27, 2010, at the Palmer Lutheran Health Center in West Union, Iowa. She was born on September 11, 1921, in rural Elgin, Iowa, to Albert and Amanda (Anderson) Nesteby. She graduated from Postville High School and received her normal training for teaching.
Iona was united in marriage to Paul Frederick Welzel on May 17, 1941, at the parsonage in Decorah, Iowa, by Rev. H.A. Hoff. Two daughters were born to this union. She worked at Waters Dairy Bar and for Milo Meyer for many years as a bookkeeper. During retirement she did bookkeeping for her husband. She enjoyed doing crosswords, playing cards, reading, canning, gardening, dancing and cats. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Survivors include two daughters, Linda (Bill) Anderson, Postville, Carol Guyer, West Union; four grandchildren, Cheryl (Dean) Schmitt, Linda (Darby) Jellings, Jackie (Charlie) O'Connell, Stacy (Danny) Oakland and eleven great-grandchildren.
Iona was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Paul Welzel on May 2, 2006; one grandson, Jay Guyer and two brothers, Arthur Nesteby and Duane Nesteby.
Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, December 30, 2010, at 11 a.m. at the Schutte-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Postville, Iowa. Intern Pastor Susan Friedrich will officiate.
Interment will be held on Thursday, December 30, 2010, at the Postville Cemetery in Postville, Iowa.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 29, 2010, from 6 - 8 p.m. at the Schutte-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Postville, Iowa, and one hour before services at the funeral home.
