Donus A. Duvel, son of Wesley H and Ellen (Vangen) Duvel, was born July 2, 1937 in Waukon. He died Dec. 4, 1992 of cancer at his home. He was 55.

Don was baptized on Aug. 15, 1937 and confirmed Dec. 25, 1950 at Salem United Church of Christ by the Rev. Edmund DeBuhr. His early education was at Ludlow #3 school. He graduated in 1955 from Waukon High School.

He enlisted in the United States Air Force after attending auto mechanic school in Kansas City. He was assigned to the Strategic Air Command on the flight crew of a B-36 as an electrician/gunner. Later, he became an in-flight refueling specialist on a KC-97 tanker.

After his discharge, he returned to the family farm and was married to Elaine Ask at the Glenwood Lutheran Church Feb. 11, 1961. They had three children, Thomas of Waukon, Laurie Wright of Decorah and Jennifer, a sophomore at Coe College in Cedar Rapids.

The Duvels purchased their own farm in 1962, and have farmed in Ludlow Township until now, with the exception of four years spent in Port Charlotte, Fla.

For short periods, Don worked for Camcar, Case Implement, and Herman Appliance Store. He graduated with honors from the Production Ag program at NITI. From 1973-1979 he operated Duvel Sales and Service as the area Rupp snowmobile dealer. While in the south he was an electrical foreman, and was currently the owner of D & W Roofing.

Don enjoyed hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, flying and bird watching. He repaired small engines, and built his own solar home. He had been a member of NFO, Port Charlotte Elks Club, Salem Consistory and Allamakee Flyers Club. His membership was current with the American Legion, the Democratic Party and the Ludlow Bible Study group.

He is survived by his wife Elaine, his mother Ellen, his brother Wayne, his children, plus four grandchildren, nine nieces and nephews and 13 grand nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on Dec. 8, 1992 at 10:30 a.m. at the Salem United Church of Christ, Rev. Dr. Elsa Marsland officiating. Burial was in Salem Cemetery. Casket bearers were Paul Hanson, George Bucheit, Jim Heier, Ray Shafer, Roger Hesse, Bill Withers and Jim Winke. Arrangements were handled by Martin Funeral Home in Waukon. Special military graveside rites were conducted by Waukon Veterans.
