Submitters note: Vergil Schave was the son of William and Caroline "Lena" (Fischer) Schave who lived at Castalia, Winneshiek County, Iowa after moving back from Cerro Gordo County, Iowa, and then in the Good Samaritan Home in Postville in their last years. Vergil's brother Clarence owned and operated Schave's Garage in Luana and his brother Glen owned a garage and a cafe/tavern in Castalia and various farms in Allamakee and Clayton County and lived in Postville also.

Vergil Schave, 77, of East Moline, died Friday, Aug. 22, 2003, at Forest Hill Health and Rehabilitation, East Moline, IL.

Services for Mr. Schave are at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Van Hoe Funeral Home, East Moline, IL. Burial is in National Cemetery, Arsenal Island, where East Moline VFW 2056 and American Legion Post 227 will conduct military honors. Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Arrowhead Ranch, Coal Valley.

Vergil Howard Schave was born December 29, 1925, in Nora Springs, Iowa, son of William and Lena (Fischer) Schave. He married Irene Sanderson Nov. 18, 1943, in Waukon, Iowa. She died March 5, 1997. He married Willeane (Wilsey) Sperry on March 20, 1999, in East Moline.

Vergil farmed in the Savanna, IL. area for many years and retired from John Deere Harvestor Works, East Moline, in 1987.

Vergil was a life member and adjutant of the East Moline AMVETS, life member of the VFW National Home, member and trustee of VFW 2056, East Moline, an associate member of the Marine Corps League and a member of UAW 865 retirees, AARP and the Mississippi Valley Country and Western Music Association. Vergil served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Willie; daughters, Bonnie Deemer and Donna Pulfrey, both of East Moline; step-daughters, Denise LaBatt of Perkin, Rheta Sperry of East Moline, Margo Mills of Murfreesboro, Tenn., and Andrea McBride of East Moline; grandchildren, Alan Deemer, Amy Robles, Anita Valdez, Tammy Wallace, Donella Pulfrey, Kristopher Sperry, Michelle Tomlinson, Corey Mills and Amy McBride; great grandchildren, David Deemer, Ashley Deemer, Irene Valdez, Emily Ledesma, Sara Deemer, Melanie Wallace, Katie Pulfrey, Krisandra Sperry, Kirsi Sperry, Daegan Hodges, Trevin Statler and Alexia Tomlinson; and a sister, Vera Pixler, Luana, Iowa.

Vergil was preceded in death by his first wife, Irene, his parents, a sister, Loretta and three brothers, Harvey, Clarence and Glen.
