Contributor: Connie Ellis (Not related)Kermit Hershel Kirkeby was born in Waukon, Iowa August 24, 1919 to Olaf and Hulda Louise Kirkeby. He received his education at Waukon High School and Waukon Junior College.
Kermit served in the Armed Forces during World War II. He was inducted into the Army in May, 1942. He was attached to the Army Engineers and was trained in map-making and camouflage. He served in this capacity in the Presidio of San Francisco and the European Theater of War. He was also a part of the occupation forces in Japan at the close of the war. He was discharged in 1945, having served his country on two continents.
He is survived by his wife Mary and son Kevin of Chicago, Illinois and two brothers, Oliver of Poway, California and Orval Harlan of Winona, Minnesota. A graveside memorial service was held Friday afternoon, September 29 at Oakland Cemetery. The service was conducted by Oliver and Orval Harlan Kirkeby, brothers of the deceased.
