Funeral services were held Tuesday, September 12 for Emmett D. Howe, 60, who died Sunday, September 10, 1989 at his rural Waukon home where he had lived for the last 59 years. The 10:30 a.m. services were conducted by the Rev. Henry Charipar at St.Mary's Church, Hanover. Burial was in Hanover Cemetery with graveside military rites. Hanson's Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

The lifelong Allamakee County resident was born September 13, 1928 in Union Prairie Township, Allamakee County, to Alfred and Marguerite (Ryan) Howe and attended school through the eighth grade. He served in the Army from 1954 to 1956 and was in the Army Reserves for eight years as an engineer equipment mechanic.

On September 7, 1957 he married Betty Lou Berns at St.John Baptist Catholic Church, West Ridge. He was a member of St.Mary's Hanover, Farm Bureau and church organizations.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by nine children, Mark of Waukon, Mrs. Scott (Kimberly) Bollman of Luana, IA, Mrs. David (Karla) Hammel of Dorchester, IA, Mrs. Bob (Kristi) Hager of Waukon, IA, Mrs. Dan (Vicki) Schutte of Castalia, IA, and Kevin, Kenny, Mary Beth and Jason, all at home; ten grandchildren and a sister, Mary Margaret Williams of Englewood, CO.

He was preceded in death by a son at birth, two sisters, Mary at birth, and Geraldine Waters, and a brother Donald in infancy. Casket bearers were Joe Gavin, Jim Ryan, Don McGraw, Paul Farley, James McCormick, John Larkin, Floyd Waters, and Phil Liddiard.
